Product data & portfolios

Environmental product data for entire product portfolios.

When EPDs, life cycle assessments and PCFs are needed for many products and variants, the individual project turns into a recurring data and calculation process. We structure product, production and environmental data as well as LCA models so that they can be used for recurring calculations and different environmental requirements. The data basis can be used several times; EPD, PCF and other declarations continue to be prepared according to their respective technical rules.

Our approach

From product data to reliable environmental information.

We structure product structures, production and environmental data as well as LCA models so that they can be used for recurring calculations and different environmental requirements. The data basis can be used several times; EPD, PCF and other declarations continue to be prepared according to their respective technical rules.

Example portfolio · construction productsPhase 1 of 5 · Understand the starting point
Product data often come from different sources and are not automatically available in a form that allows variants, families and recurring information to be used sensibly.
Starting point

When variants, markets and declarations increase

Many manufacturers start with a single EPD. As soon as further products, variants or requirements are added, isolated individual calculation is often no longer sufficient.

Many variantsFormats, thicknesses or formulations differ in only a few parameters.
Similar productsSeveral products share material, process and plant but are calculated individually.
Recurring updatesEPDs expire, background data change, values need to be carried forward.
Several target marketsDifferent programmes and rules require adapted declarations.
Different output formatsCustomers, tenders and building assessments request the same data in different forms.
Distributed dataProduct and process data sit in ERP, PIM, Excel and with suppliers.
Product families & variants

How many EPDs does my product portfolio need?

Not every product variant necessarily has to be declared in its own EPD. Depending on product structure, target market, PCR and programme rules, several products can be grouped via different EPD types. The underlying calculation can be based on reusable or parameterised LCA models.

How products and variants can be declared in EPDs depends, among other things, on product portfolio, PCR, programme requirements and the intended significance.

Possible EPD types

Specific EPDDeclaration of a specific product or a clearly defined product configuration.
Average EPDAverage environmental impacts for a defined group of comparable products.
Worst-case EPDConservative declaration of a defined product group based on the least favourable relevant variant.
Representative EPDDeclaration of a defined product group based on a representative product or dataset, where the respective programme rules allow this.

Which type is suitable and permissible depends on the product portfolio, target market, PCR and the rules of the respective programme operator.

Regardless of the EPD type chosen, the calculation can be based on a reusable or parameterised LCA model.

When a scalable approach makes sense

—Many similar products or variants are to be declared as EPDs—New variants or updates are added regularly—Product and production data are available in structured form or can be structured—EPDs are to be prepared or updated repeatedly

Whether a manual, hybrid or software-supported approach is economically sensible depends on portfolio, update frequency and data situation.

Data & systems

We work with the data where they are today

Product, material and supplier data are rarely in one place. We capture them in a structured way, check quality and gaps and define which data are permanently required for recurring calculations.

Typical data sources
ERPBills of materials, quantities, plants
PIMProduct master data and variants
ExcelHistorically grown surveys and lists
Supplier dataMaterial and intermediate product information
Production dataEnergy and processes per plant
Existing LCA dataExisting models and EPDs

Whether a direct system integration makes economic sense or a structured data export is sufficient is clarified in the project.

Scope of services

What we take care of

Expert LCA work and data modelling from a single source. We define the degree of automation only once portfolio and data situation are understood.

AnalysisUnderstand the product and data system: portfolio, variants, existing data and requirements.
Data requirementsDefine which data are collected, checked and maintained, and how.
Variants & product familiesDetermine product families and relevant parameters and define the rules by which variants are calculated or grouped.
ModellingDevelop LCA and calculation models that can be reused for new variants.
Define the processDetermine a manual, hybrid or software-supported workflow that fits the need.
Decision logic

The right approach emerges from the portfolio.

Only once portfolio, required declarations, target markets, programme rules and update frequency have been clarified can it be decided which implementation route makes economic sense: manual, hybrid or software-supported.

01NeedWhich declarations are required, and by whom?
02PortfolioHow can products, product families and variants be structured sensibly?
03RequirementsTarget markets, PCRs and programme rules, permissible EPD types and update frequency.
04Economic viabilityWhich implementation route makes economic sense: manual, hybrid or software-supported?
05ImplementationManual, hybrid or software-supported – matched to portfolio and repetition needs.

The larger and more dynamic the portfolio and the more frequently EPDs or other declarations need to be updated, the more important structured data, reusable calculation logic and efficient processes become.

Implementation routes

Three possible implementation routes

ManualFor individual or few declarationsData collection, calculation and documentation on a project basis.
HybridFor recurring requirements and growing portfoliosStructured data basis and reusable LCA models, combined with expert project work.
Software-supportedFor larger or dynamic product portfoliosClient-specifically configured data and calculation processes support variants and regular updates.

Which route makes economic sense depends not only on the number of products but also on variant logic, data situation, update frequency and the requirements of the target markets.

Software for scaling

As portfolios grow, software can scale processes.

For larger or dynamic product portfolios, software-supported solutions can make recurring data, calculation and declaration processes more efficient. Which solution makes sense depends on data situation, variant logic and update frequency.

EPD SuiteOur EPD Suite supports companies in mapping EPD and LCA processes for product portfolios in a structured and repeatable way. It is configured client-specifically and aligned with data structure, products and calculation logic.
ModuleEPD BuilderFor preparing and updating EPDs based on client-specific data and calculation models.
ModuleEPD AnalyzerFor visualising, comparing and benchmarking EPD and LCA data.
